Hong Kong fencer Kaylin Hsieh delivered an impressive performance to claim the bronze medal in the women’s individual epee at the National Games on Saturday, defeating Mo Wanlin of Guangdong 15-9.

Competing at the Kai Tak Arena, the world number four employed a strong defence and expert distance control to frustrate her opponent throughout the bout.

Hsieh’s offensive timing was equally precise, helping her maintain a steady three-point lead by the middle of the match.

Mo came out aggressively in the third period, but Hsieh remained composed, gradually extending her advantage before closing out the contest.

Hsieh said she really wanted a medal, reflecting on the recent changes in her training regime.

"I performed really well in the last World Cup, but then my old coach left. I had to adapt and change many things," she said.

"Since my opponents have adapted to my style, I need to change as well. I see it as a good thing because it means I can improve further.

"This is the first competition that allowed me to use these new skills, and I’m really happy that I was able to achieve this."

Hsieh also dedicated the medal to her support team, saying: "This medal isn't just mine because so many people helped me train. I do work hard, but there are still areas where I need improvement. I am not perfect."

The bronze medal victory came after a semi-final defeat to Fujian’s Lin Sheng, which had set up the third-place showdown with Mo.

This win marks the second straight National Games in which a Hong Kong athlete has earned bronze in the women’s individual epee, following Vivian Kong’s podium finish in 2021.
