Hong Kong cyclist Ceci Lee on Monday crowned a spectacular National Games campaign by winning her third gold medal in the women’s omnium, cementing her status as Hong Kong's most successful athlete in the Games' history.
The gruelling omnium, which tests riders across four events in a single day, began with a dominant performance by Lee in the 10-kilometre scratch race.
After a tactical start where two riders initially broke away, Lee launched a powerful attack after the midway point.
She successfully gained a lap on the main peloton and maintained her advantage, crossing the line first to secure a maximum 40 points.
The competition intensified in the second event, the tempo race.
Here, riders from Tianjin and Liaoning stole the show by each gaining a lap on the field, taking the top two spots.
Lee battled hard to earn eight points, landing her a solid third-place finish.
She replicated that podium result in the tense elimination race, where the last rider is eliminated every two laps, setting the stage for a decisive final test.
Lee’s consistency put her in a strong position in the final event – the points race – where sprints are held every 10 laps. She scored 15 crucial points across four sprints.
This brought her total to 124 points, enough to clinch the overall omnium title and her third gold medal of the Games.
After her victory, Lee revealed the weight of expectation she carried upon herself.
"A lot of veteran cyclers have stepped down at this year's National Games, so I felt like I needed to take on a bigger role and get results," she said.
"There's quite a bit of pressure."
She credited her win to self-belief, even in moments of doubt.
"Luckily, I could do what I needed to do. Believing in myself is really important. Just right now, I had some self-doubt but I kept telling myself it's alright and that my abilities wouldn't suddenly disappear, so this mindset is very crucial," she said.
This omnium gold follows her victory in the Madison event on Sunday and her earlier win in the road race.
With four gold medals wins in the 2021 and 2025 National Games, Lee has now surpassed cycling legend Wong Kam-po for the most gold medals won by a Hong Kong athlete at the Games.
This is also Hong Kong's eighth gold medal in the ongoing Games.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law congratulated Lee on winning her latest gold medal.
"Winning a total of three gold medals in the 15th NG, she fully displayed her extraordinary capabilities, demonstrating the exceptional strength of Hong Kong cyclists again. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the coaches and the entire support team for their efforts and dedication, enabling the athletes to focus on training, reach new heights, and achieve remarkable results," Law said in a statement.
