Chief Executive John Lee says the government will put up plaques at historical sites to deepen public understanding of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Lee was speaking at a ceremony at Tsam Chuk Wan Martyrs Memorial Garden in Sai Kung to commemorate the 80th anniversary of victory.

Lee was joined by Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak, representatives from the Society of Veterans of the Original Hong Kong Independent Battalion of the Dongjiang Column, and other local organisations.

In a solemn tribute, attendees observed a two-minute silence followed by a bow led by the chief executive.

Lee said various places in the city bear the footprints of the Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade and came under the Dongjiang, or East River, Column.

He added that the purpose of remembrance is to inspire a commitment to peace.

"Currently, we are witnessing an unprecedented global transformation, with complex geopolitical tensions making peace far from assured," Lee said.

"We remember history not to perpetuate hatred and sorrow but to awaken people's yearning for and commitment to peace, so that people of all nations can enjoy peace and tranquillity.

"Let us unite and forge ahead, carrying forward the spirit of our heroes, promoting patriotism and working tirelessly for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, to contribute to the peaceful development of a community with a shared future for mankind."
