Hong Kong's sole delegate to the country's top legislature on Saturday said she hopes to see more local schools cover modern Chinese history more comprehensively.

Starry Lee, who is also chairwoman of the SAR's Patriotic Education Working Group, told a Commercial Radio programme that by doing so, students can learn more about Chinese resistance against the Japanese.

"I look forward to seeing greater coverage of modern Chinese history," said Lee, who was among the 360-strong SAR delegation that took part in commemorative events in Beijing for the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War this week.

"I think previously we covered ancient history more extensively, but only briefly went over more modern events," she said.

"Since the history of the war of resistance is so important, shouldn't we cover modern history more, so that we can understand that in order to have peace, we need to build the nation into a great country."

Lee said the scale of the military parade held in Beijing was much greater than that of a decade ago.

This, she added, showed that the nation's military power has grown significantly.

Lau Siu-kai, a consultant to the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macau Studies who also attended the commemorative events, said on the same show that the parade held on Wednesday will affect the international landscape.

He noted that a large number of new weapons that were on display showcased China's military power.

"I think Americans know that the US has no way to defeat China," Lau said.

"They would even get beaten by China, especially in the western Pacific region."
