Beijing’s Ministry of Veterans Affairs said more than 30 memorial facilities and historic sites have been included in the latest list of designated sites related to the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
During a press conference on Sunday, vice minister of Veterans Affairs Ma Feixiong announced the inclusion of 34 new memorial facilities and sites, taking the tally to 294.
The number of heroes and heroic groups also expanded to 1,128.
"History is the best textbook and the best wake-up call. The memorial facilities and historical sites of the War of Resistance, as well as the heroes and heroic groups, are important witnesses to the 14-year war and important carriers of the great spirit of the War of Resistance," Ma said.
"Releasing the two lists is not only an important demonstration of commemorating the immortal achievements of the martyrs and carrying forward the national spirit, but also an opportunity to cultivate patriotism and carry out historical and political education in society."
Sun Deli, vice administrator of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, said the country hosts an average of 500 exhibitions related to the War of Resistance each year, attracting more than 60 million visits.
Mainland authorities will also visit memorial sites in Hong Kong and Macau this year.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan said the government is conducting repair and protection works at war resistance-related historical sites in Hong Kong.
He said he hopes people can learn about the martyrs’ contributions to the country by visiting these places.
