Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Bill Tang said on Tuesday that young people in Hong Kong should learn more about history and the spirit of resistance during the war against Japan.

He made the comments while giving a talk at a secondary school to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Tang called on the younger generation to better understand the nation’s history, including the contributions made by Hong Kong during the war. He said they should learn from the wartime spirit, work hard, and help make the country safer.

“Teaching history only in the classroom may put pressure on students,” Tang said.

“We should use different methods, like field trips, film screenings, and watching tomorrow’s live broadcast of the military parade. The aim is to first spark interest and curiosity, so students can see history as part of their daily life and strengthen their sense of national identity.”

Around 120 students at Buddhist Hung Sean Chau Memorial College joined the session.
