Hong Kong held a ceremony on Wednesday morning to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Acting Chief Executive Eric Chan led the proceedings at the City Hall Memorial Garden at 8am.

Senior government officials, including Acting Financial Secretary Michael Wong and Acting Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung were present.

Representatives from central government organisations, veterans of the original Hong Kong Independent Battalion of the Dongjiang Column, and members of various war veteran groups were also among those attending the ceremony.

The event started off with a flag-raising ceremony and the singing of the national anthem, followed by a rifle volley by the Police Rifle Squad.

A two-minute silence was observed before Chan laid a wreath to honour the fighters.
