China on Wednesday unveiled for the first time its triad of nuclear missiles that can be launched from air, land and sea – at a grand military parade in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of China’s V-day.
A Xinhua news agency report said the weapons are “China's strategic ‘ace’ power to safeguard the country's sovereignty and nation's dignity.”
The triad includes the JingLei-1 air-based long-range missile, JuLang-3 submarine-launched intercontinental missile, DongFeng-61 land-based intercontinental missile, and a new DongFeng-31 land-based intercontinental missile.
The liquid-fuelled DongFeng-5C intercontinental strategic nuclear missiles, which have a global strike range, also passed through Tiananmen Square.
Other major hardware showcased at the event were the country’s strategic H-6N bombers, which flew over Tiananmen Square, while the H-6K and H-6J bombers made an appearance at the parade.
These bombers are the People’s Liberation Army’s air-based long-range strike forces.
Four types of carrier-based fighter jets J-15DH, J-15DT, J-35 and J-15T flew over the square in two V-formations.
Early-warning aircraft KongJing-500A, escorted by J-16 fighter jets, and KongJing-600, escorted by aircraft carrier-based fighter jets J-15T, also flew over some 50,000 spectators attending the event.
A range of other weapons, ranging from drones and lasers designed to take down unmanned enemy aircraft were presented to the public.
All-weather hypersonic missiles, cruise missiles, new types of unmanned underwater vehicles, electronic countermeasures, and even cyber warfare equipment were part of the parade.
A powerful trio of anti-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) systems also made an appearance, consisting of an anti-UAV missile-gun integrated system, high-energy laser weapons, and high-power microwave weapons. (Xinhua/RTHK)
