China staged a gala on Wednesday evening at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capping a day-long series of commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

President Xi Jinping and other senior Chinese leaders walked into the auditorium and shook hands with representatives of war veterans.

The gala titled "Justice Will Prevail" started with the solemn ringing of eight bells, followed by a series of music, poetry, dance and drama performances re-enacting historical wartime scenes.

More than 20 groups participated in the performances, including the National Theatre of China, the National Ballet of China and the People’s Liberation Army.

A number of officials and political leaders from Hong Kong were also on hand, among them Chief Executive John Lee, Financial Secretary Paul Chan, Secretary for Justice Paul Lam, Executive Council convenor Regina Ip and Hong Kong’s sole deputy to the National People's Congress Standing Committee Starry Lee.

The gala lasted more than 90 minutes.
