A record 11 Hong Kong riders will saddle up for this year’s National Games, aiming higher than ever before as they contest all three equestrian disciplines – dressage, show jumping and eventing – in a bold bid to canter home with medals.

Since 1997, Hong Kong’s equestrian teams have competed in seven National Games, collecting six medals in total, with one of them being gold. That gold remains the only one by a Hong Kong athlete at the Games outside of cycling.

The competitions this year will be held at Guangming International Equestrian Centre in Shenzhen.

Eventer Thomas Ho says he’s far better prepared this time compared to his maiden appearance eight years ago, having picked up several championships along the way that boosted his confidence.

As part of his buildup, Ho also competed in a test event in Shenzhen to sharpen his form and confidence.

"The way I've carried out this training programme, I think it's kind of benefited me better," he said.

"I've gone to a few shows in China. I've kind of learned the whole process. So it won't be as daunting when I get to the National Games."

Veteran rider Jacqueline Lai is aiming to complete her National Games medal set.

She first reached the podium in Jinan in 2009 with a team jumping bronze. Four years later in Shenyang, she went a step further with a silver in individual jumping.

After a 12-year hiatus, she’s eager to see whether the skills she has refined can deliver a maiden gold.

Although she’s leasing a horse this time – giving her less time to build rapport with her partner – Lai says she isn’t too concerned.

"This horse is actually very kind, but it gets very eager as soon as it enters the arena," she said.

"When it's eager, you can't really control it too much; it doesn't really like being controlled by the rider.

"I have to find a balance, but I will use my years of experience to establish a partnership with it in a short time."

The equestrian competitions at the National Games run until November 19, with six gold medals up for grabs.
