The SAR's men's and women's squads are hoping to use the home crowd to their advantage when they host other teams from across the country for the National Games next Wednesday at Kai Tak Stadium.
Two medals are up for grabs from three days of competition that run through next Friday in Hong Kong – long been touted as a premier stop on the rugby sevens calendar.
Co-captain of the men's squad, James Christie, said the goal is simple: win gold in front of the home fans, for the home fans.
"We haven't played [in the National Games] in 12 years, I think, or something like that, so it's hugely exciting, especially being in Hong Kong, playing in front of our friends and family. I think that's one huge motivation, as well as we don't have many tournaments during the year, so any tournament, we're always excited and raring to go."
He said the fans keep them motivated and are essentially the team's "13th member" – after the seven in the starting lineup, and five substitutes.
Christie also said complementing and trusting each other is key to coming out on top. He insists no one is expected to be able to do it all on the field.
"DWYGA is one of our mottos or sayings in the team. It means do what you're good at. We don't all have to be good at everything. Just play to your super strength. You're picked in the team for a reason. So it's just simple. Do your super strength, and we'll get the job done," the co-captain said.
Head Coach Jevon Groves knows winning it all, or finishing on the podium alone will not be easy. He expects tough physical competition from some of the provincial teams such as Shandong and Jiangsu.
"We need to be able to match those teams physically and if we do that I think that we could sort of impose our game. We want to be creative. We want to play fast. We want to be physical," he said.
Groves added he remains confident in the team achieving good results, so long as the players perform to their usual level.
