Hong Kong cyclist Charles Ng narrowly missed a podium finish at the National Games men's individual time trial event, placing fourth with a time of 46 minutes 43.98 seconds.

He was about eight seconds behind an opponent from Shandong who got bronze.

Another cyclist from Shandong claimed gold while a Tianjin rider secured silver.

The other SAR representative, Vincent Lau, finished sixth.

Lau, who suffered a minor slip during the race, said the rainy, humid weather made the track slippery and hampered his performance.

The road cycling event sees riders race alone to see who completes the course in the shortest time.

The 38.7-kilometre race on Friday featured 28 athletes from the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.

Meanwhile, the SAR’s Chloe Leung finished in eighth place out of the 27 riders in the women's individual time trial event.

Cyclists from Hainan, Jiangsu and Henan claimed gold, silver and bronze, respectively.

Hong Kong will have nine cyclists competing in the men's individual road cycling event on Saturday.

Apart from Lau and Ng, the other participating athletes include Tso Kai-kwong, Chu Tsun-wai, Ng Sum-lui, Spencer Cheung, Stuart Yau and Tommy Wu.

The race features a 231.8-kilometre route across Zhuhai, Hong Kong, and Macau, during which riders will cross the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
