Hong Kong table tennis stars Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Games after defeating Hebei's Zhou Yu and Zang Xiaotong 3-1 in the mixed-doubles event.

The game was a thriller with the Hebei pair edging their Hong Kong counterparts in the first game by 12-11.

Wong and Doo fought back to win the second and third games by 11-8 and 11-7 to seize a 2-1 lead in the match.

The SAR pair then sealed the match in a smashing 11-5 game to advance.

After the match, Wong expressed happiness with the result, saying the upcoming match would be his first quarter-final at the Games.

"Everyone knows the table tennis standard in the nation is extremely high. Every province sends their top athletes, making every match intensely challenging," he told RTHK.

"That's why our goal is just taking it one match at a time. We want to enjoy the competition and perform to the best of our ability."

Doo, for her part, felt that she and Wong performed at a high level and credited their thorough pre-match preparation for their going through.

"We took an early lead in the first game, but I was genuinely nervous and made some unforced errors," she said.

"As the match progressed, we maintained constant communication and kept encouraging each other," she said.

"Our tactical execution was effective, which contributed to our solid performance today."

The quarter-final will be held on November 11.
