Hong Kong table tennis star Wong Chun-ting on Sunday made it to the round of 16 in the National Games' men's singles event.

He defeated Shanghai's Zhao Zhaoyan in a gruelling 4-3 encounter.

Wong, 34, said afterwards this was the first time that he's made it this far in the singles event at the National Games, and he hopes he can continue to make breakthroughs.

He awaits the winner of the match between Wei Shihao from Heilongjiang and current world number one, Beijing's Wang Chuqin.

"Well I have faced Wang in many different levels of competition, and has yet to beat him once. The closest match was at the last Asian Games in Hangzhou; that game inspired me a lot," Wong told RTHK.

"But this is the National Games, many mainland athletes find this a very important occasion. If I do match up against him, it would be at the National Games for the first time."

Wong's mixed doubles partner, Doo Hoi-kem, was knocked out in the round of 32 in women's singles.

She lost in straight sets to Liaoning's Liu Fei.

In badminton, Hong Kong's men's team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Zhejiang in group play, their first loss in three outings. Angus Ng managed the only win, while Lee Cheuk-yiu and two doubles pairs dropped their matches.

The SAR are now third in Group E behind Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Team Hong Kong still have two group matches to go, against Liaoning and Hubei.
