Hong Kong's table tennis star pair of Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem were knocked out of the National Games in the mixed doubles quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The long-time duo lost to Xu Haidong and Chen Xingtong from Liaoning province 4-1 - but making the final eight was still the furthest the Hong Kong pair have ever gone at a National Games.

Hong Kong took the first set but had trouble stopping their opponents' rallies from then onwards.

Doo said after the game that they were simply outplayed.

"I think we played okay in this match. But our opponents, they're quite strong, they limited our tactics," she told RTHK.

"It was difficult for us to play to our strengths in the game. They were rather good at controlling the first three strokes."

Wong, for his part, said they played to their capabilities and the field at the Games was just as strong as those at international tournaments.

The pairing of Wong and Doo has won the SAR four bronze medals at table tennis world championships in the past decade.
