Two of Hong Kong’s swimmers are making waves at the National Games, with Olympic medallist Siobhan Haughey leading the charge on Wednesday by qualifying for the final of her freestyle event.

The star swimmer powered her way into the women’s 200-metre freestyle final, finishing second overall in the semifinals with a time of one minute and 56.73 seconds.

Being the record holder for Asia, Haughey believes she can be even faster in the final competition.

"Things are much better now. I can now resume my usual competitive form," she said.

"I think it's because I haven't competed for so long that I need some time to adjust. Also, I feel that this morning's match gave me a lot of confidence, so I'm much calmer now."

She added that she will discuss race strategies with her coach ahead of the final race.

Her teammate, Gilaine Ma, finished 14th overall and did not advance.

On the men’s side, Adam Mak kept Hong Kong’s hopes alive by narrowly securing a spot in the final of the 50-metre breaststroke.

He made the cut by finishing eighth overall in the semi-finals, clocking 27.77 seconds.

"I think I did alright. I didn't set a specific goal that I need to achieve it for sure because I didn't want to create too much pressure," Mak said.

His teammates Tsui Yik-ki and Nicholas Cheung finished 11th and 14th and were unable to advance.
