Hong Kong table tennis star Wong Chun-ting has been eliminated from the men's singles event at the National Games on Wednesday, but not before pushing world number one Wang Chuqin to the absolute limit in a thrilling seven-game contest.
After dropping the first game 11-5, Wong mounted a fierce comeback.
Leveraging aggressive serves and precise returns, he snatched two tightly contested games in a row, both 11-9, to seize the momentum.
Wang reasserted his dominance, however, comfortably taking the fourth and fifth games 11-5, 11-5 to move within one game from victory.
Facing elimination in the sixth game and trailing 8-3, Wong staged a stunning reversal.
He rallied to score seven consecutive points, clawing his way to an 11-9 win and forcing a decisive seventh game.
Ultimately, Wang's class shone through in the final showdown.
He established an early 6-2 lead and never looked back, closing out the match 11-5 to secure a hard-fought 4-3 victory and ended Wong's campaign in the round of 16.
Wong told RTHK that he didn't expect today's game to be so intense.
"My opponent played exceptionally well, but he seemed to be carrying a lot of pressure, so he was a bit nervous on the court," he said.
"In some positions, I hoped to exploit his weaknesses and force him to make more mistakes. But towards the end, I felt my body was becoming less controllable."
