Hong Kong’s tennis star Coleman Wong kicked off his men’s singles campaign at the National Games on a high note in Zhuhai, cruising past Shanxi’s Duan Hao in a straight-sets 6-1, 6-3 victory to advance to the second round.

The world No 145 served up a dominant game, dazzling with eight aces and converting more than 90 percent of his first serves without giving his opponent any break opportunities.

Despite the commanding performance, Wong said he was still adapting.

“I hope to improve with every game, and serving is an aspect of the game in which I need to improve,” he said.

"I played decently, and my serving was quite good. I will try my best. I don’t know when my next singles match is. There is still the doubles. I hope I can stay in the competition for as long as possible."

Wong was also excited about competing in the Games, saying the team atmosphere in a sport as individualistic as tennis was rare indeed.

Teammate Nicholas Cheng also advanced to the second round after a nail-biting three-set match against Hubei’s Zhang Yiwei.

Cheng edged out a close first-set tiebreak 7-6 (4), but struggled in the second set, winning just 36 percent of his first-serve points in a 6-0 defeat.

He rallied in the decisive third set, breaking serve three times to secure a 6-3 win and the match.

However, Jack Cheng’s singles campaign ended in a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Shanghai’s Liu Hanyi, which lasted one hour 27 minutes.
