Shanghai’s Fan Zhendong emerged victorious over his Paris Olympic teammate, Wang Chuqin of Beijing in a thrilling all-star semifinal at the National Games, securing his place in the men's singles table tennis gold medal match.
The highly anticipated clash between the two table tennis giants lived up to its billing, with Fan eventually clinching the win 4-2 after a fierce battle.
The match began as a tit-for-tat tug-of-war, with Wang seizing the first game 11-7, only for Fan to answer back 11-9.
Wang then reclaimed the lead by taking the third game 11-9, but Fan levelled the match once more with an 11-7 win in the fourth.
Ultimately, Fan found another gear, dominating the final two games 11-5 and 11-7 to seal the victory.
Reflecting on the intense contest, Fan said both players performed at a high level.
"Whether it was alternating or staying close, I think we both made crucial plays. For me, I feel that I achieved the...goals I set before the match," he said.
"I feel that I did well today in putting pressure on him while trying to minimise mistakes. This led to opportunities, and I was able to seize them."
Fan will now face Lin Shidong of Hainan for the National Games gold medal on Sunday at 1.15pm.
