Hong Kong's star badminton duo, Jordan Tang and Tse Ying-suet, crashed out of the National Games in the round of 16 on Sunday.
They lost 0-2 to Fujian's Ou Xuanteng and Huang Dongping.
Huang was part of the pair that won the mixed doubles gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
The match, which was held in Shenzhen, was tight throughout, with the Hong Kong pair managing to fight back from several deficits to cut it to 19-20 before losing 19-21.
The Fujian pair then raced to a 7-2 early lead in the second set, which they never relinquished and won 21-16.
"They performed better than we did. We just couldn't manage to find a breakthrough," Tse said.
"We were somewhat affected emotionally by what happened on the court. We didn't do well enough to start the second set, we need to improve on that."
The veteran Hong Kong pair were playing in the National Games for the first time, and Tang found it regrettable that it was not meant to be.
"We couldn't win a medal in the end, that's regrettable. At the same time, the atmosphere at the National Games is really very good," he said.
In men's singles competition, Angus Ng was through to the quarter-finals after beating Lu Guangzu from Jiangsu in straight sets.
Hong Kong teammates Jason Gunawan and Happy Lo, however, were both knocked out in the round of 16 in straight sets.
