The Hong Kong men's fencing team powered their way to National Games gold in the team foil event on Wednesday — their best-ever finish in the competition.
Edgar Cheung, Ryan Choi, Leung Chin-yu and Lawrence Ng defeated fencers from Fujian 45-34 in front of a raucous home crowd at the Kai Tak Arena.
The SAR led 25-21 after five bouts in a nail-biting final, before reigning world champion Choi broke away with a 5-2 spurt in the sixth against Chen Weiquan.
Fujian's Xu Jie, who won the individual foil gold at the Games and had defeated Cheung and Choi along the way, was limited to a combined 15-15 against Hong Kong in the team event.
Choi said he wanted to thank all the supporters in the Arena and those watching the final on TV.
"Because none of this is a given. When I first started out as an athlete, there were very few people watching, especially fencing, which is a niche sport," Choi said.
"But now, the place is packed and the cheers are endless. I feel so grateful for everything I've been through, and finally, I want to thank my teammates and our coach. Today, no one was replaceable; if any one of us were missing, we wouldn't have won the gold medal."
His teammates all agreed that the atmosphere was superb.
"We won as a team and we all had one goal in mind," Cheung said.
"The whole atmosphere was superb. I'm very happy with winning gold at the National Games, it was very enjoyable."
The gold is Hong Kong's ninth of the Games — the most ever for the SAR.
