Hong Kong swimmer Lau Chiu-yee on Tuesday broke the national record to win the SAR’s first gold medal in swimming at the National Games for Persons with Disabilities.
The 16-year-old powered to victory in the women’s S14 200m freestyle final in Shenzhen with a time of two minutes and 13.5 seconds.
“I felt nervous at the start of the race, but once I got going, the nervousness faded away,” she said.
Lau was closely followed to the touch by a whisker by teammate Chan Yui-lam, who was just 0.1 seconds slower, to claim silver, while a Hubei swimmer took bronze.
Chan said she was very pleased for Lau, calling her own performance a surprise.
“I had to stop training for a month due to body issues and only had one-and-a-half months to prepare," she said.
"This is better than what I achieved before despite more training time for other events. It was really beyond my expectations.”
Ng Cheuk-yan added another medal to the Hong Kong tally by securing bronze in the SM7 women’s 200m individual medley.
Ng said she was very pleased with her performance, adding that it was great preparation for her upcoming main events at the Games, including the SB8 100m breaststroke.
