Hong Kong swimmers delivered a standout performance in the pool on Sunday morning, securing a one-two finish in the women’s 100 metre butterfly S14 at the National Games for Persons with Disabilities.
Chan Yui-lam continued her impressive medal haul by smashing the national record with a time of one minute and 6.05 seconds, adding another gold to her collection of two golds and two silvers from these Games.
Close behind was her teammate Lau Chiu-yee, who claimed silver just 3.19 seconds behind, further building on her own tally of one gold and one bronze.
Fang Zheng of Hubei rounded out the podium in third.
After the race, Chan said she could have done better even though she broke the national record.
"For the Games, I rested a bit before I resumed training. I noticed I get more nervous compared to before," she said.
"But overall, I was able to overcome myself so that is all that matters."
The record-breaking momentum carried over from Saturday’s events, where Cheung Tsun-lok set a new national mark in the men’s 100 metre butterfly S14.
After sitting in third at the halfway point, Cheung surged ahead in the final 50 metres to win gold in 59.44 seconds.
Silver went to a swimmer from Henan, while Cheung’s Hong Kong teammate Hui Ka-chun took bronze.
Cheung had already hinted at the record in the heats, posting a time of 59.71 seconds, but bettered it by more than two-tenths of a second in the final.
“I am very happy. It’s my first time competing in Shenzhen,” he said after the race.
“I want to thank my parents, my sister and also the Hong Kong fans for supporting me.”
Meanwhile, Lip Kin-kwan also reached the podium, earning bronze in the men’s 100 metre breaststroke SB13 with a time of one minute and 16.08 seconds.
